Quarter 3 Reviews 4/9

008 Horror – Old

The Devil’s Violin by Lucy Rivers, originally from 2014, featured Rivers’ score on the violin.  Hannah is a 16-year-old girl living in a council estate flat with her hopelessly non-functioning mother and “demon” baby brother, Gethin.  (Actually, all the characters said Gethin was demonic, but he never really demonstrated it, other than having a fondness for black cats and dead rats and being obese.  I wonder if that tag was only included because of Labyrinth?)  Hannah has had to drop out of school and does everything for her lazy, helpless mother whose boyfriend, “Meathead,” abuses her.  One night, Hannah hears enrapturing violin music coming from an abandoned building across the street.  There, she meets the mysterious violinist.  To get her own violin like his, she has to bring materials—dead bodies.
