Quarter 4 Reviews - 008 Horror - Old

008 Horror – Old

Reunion by Janice Okoh is one of my favorite dramas (so far) in The Man in Black repertoire. The cast is second-to-none.  Joy (Nikki Amuka-Bird) is from a traditional African background.  She’s a professional who recently split from her long-term boyfriend Steve (Alex Lanipekun); indeed, he left her.  As a woman of a certain age, there’s pressure on her from her community, and not least her mother, Grace (Adjoa Andoh), to find a husband and have children.  Against her better judgment, and as evidence of her desperation to get Steve back, she pays cash to the dubious traditional healer Dr Alex (Richard Pepple), who gives her a bracelet with medicine which, if she feeds Steve enough of it, will make him wild for her again.  Unfortunately, Joy doesn’t heed Dr Alex’s advice and gives Steve too much of the medicine, causing him to be violent to her.  Too late, she tries to discard the bracelet.  Will her burgeoning relationship with workmate Tom (Adam Billington) be dashed, too? Scary and totally believable.  Reunion was directed by Gemma Jenkins, also starred Karlina Grace, and was originally broadcast in 2011.
