010 Police Procedural – New
I remember listening to one of the other Inspector Chen novel dramatizations on
a plane but falling asleep in the middle of it.
However, I enjoyed Hold Your
Breath, China quite a lot. The Inspector Chen dramatizations are good,
old-fashioned sleuthing tales set in contemporary China. Inspector Chen (Jamie Zubairi), a politically
entangled poet as well as an Inspector, has an excellent deputy in
Cockney-accented Detective Yu (Dan Li).
They’re both hampered in this story by Party mouthpiece Detective Qin
(Liz Sutherland-Lim). Yu has to investigate the case of mysterious killings of
joggers and other early morning prowlers, eventually—with Chen’s
help—identifying it as a protest against the air quality in Shanghai. This dovetails nicely with the case that Chen
has been pulled onto involving his old flame Shanshan (Rebecca Boey), who is
now married to a “Big Buck”—a wealthy businessman. She is now an online activist campaigning for
the environment. The performances are strong, including one of my favorite
radio actors, Andrew Leung. It was
directed by David Hunter. The novel was
written by Qui Xiaolong and adapted by Joy Wilkinson.
