012 Contemporary Comedy – Old
In Showing Promise by
Dave Sheasby, Marjorie (Heather Stoney) narrates to her husband what had
happened in a writing class she had recently taught. She had been teaching writing classes for
years, with the same regulars—Brian (Gerry Kersey), John (John Branwell), Jean
(Lorraine Peters), and Florence (Daphne Oxenford)—all elderly people, some more
serious craftspeople than the others. Things changed somewhat when Harry (Graham
Roberts) first came to class, a brash man who rode a motorbike and more or less
asked Marjorie out on a date after the first class (even though she was married
and he was married). Later, Marjorie
felt certain that an unconventional poem Harry had written and read aloud in
class had been romantically about her.
She was getting ready to talk to Harry about this and explain that this
could never be, but he surprised her by saying he was leaving the class—his
wife needed him around the house more. Things
had not been quite as they seemed.
Originally from 1990, Showing
Promise was directed by Tony Cliff.
