Quarter 3 Reviews- 016 Speculative Fiction-New

016 Speculative Fiction – New

I’d heard half of a previous series of Curious Under the Stars, the mysterious, magic realism series set in a fictitious Welsh seaside town.  I found it very intriguing and wondered what ultimately happened.  In this story, Gareth Evans, (Elis James) the pub landlord, is suffering a midlife crisis of sorts.  He and his wife Diane (Emma Sidi) are running the pub with their young daughter (in the previous series, Emlyn was having trouble accepting a cappuccino machine in the pub).  Emlyn (Ifan Huw Dafydd) is the mysterious, Welsh-speaking mystic who seems to be a fixture of Meic Povey’s writing.  Megan is the witless barmaid (Gwyneth Keyworth).  The town is populated by other people (and other creatures, evidently), but we don’t hear much from them.  This time, we have a what-is-he? story about an orphan named Guto.  As is the style of this series, we’re never really sure whether the supernatural/fable-like elements of the story are real.  I wasn’t sure about the ending, but I do find the atmosphere of these stories intriguing and enjoyable.  Curious Under the Stars Series 5 was written by Alan Harris based on characters created by Meic Povey and directed by James Robinson and Nigel Lewis.
