2016 Quarter 1 Review - 3/7

010 Police Procedural – New

I’ve given this its own rather specific category all because of this series, November Dead List (series 2) by Nick Perry.  I haven’t heard series 1, and it didn’t make a jot of difference.  This was the golden standard by which I am now measuring all radio crime series, and I have to tell you, every single one since then has come up short.  Before this, I hadn’t ever listened to a 15 Minute Drama in the crime genre before, although I know they are a mainstay.  It features DCI Greaves (Lia Williams), a hard-nosed but somewhat humorous, self-deprecating woman, her DS Paul Ellison (George Watkins), and a murder mystery in East Norfolk, with one of the lowest crime rates in the country.  Nick Perry is very skilled in using both radio and TV tropes to anchor the story and then going off into exciting realms.  It had good pacing and suspense.  A manhunt by ex-sergeant John Sweeney (Steve Toussaint) brings up “copycat” murders from London (evidently from series 1), people killed in the manner of martyred saints.  Sweeney couldn’t pin it on Catholic priest Emmanuel Guerra (Michael Jibson) at the time, but Greaves, perchance, can.
